Newcastle United are exploring defensive options ahead of the summer transfer window as one of several Premier League clubs getting ready for another squad overhaul, as is always the case in England if you want to stay competitive.

With financial flexibility expected to improve and bolstering the squad depth a priority in Tyneside, attention has shifted toward players approaching the end of their contracts as a viable path to add solid pieces to the rotation.

According to reports in Italy, Bournemouth center-back Marcos Senesi has formally informed club officials that he intends to leave when his deal expires at the end of the season, thus becoming a prime target for clubs across the continent.

The 28-year-old defender has reportedly told the club hierarchy he is seeking a different experience out of Bournemouth, with the club now pretty much destined to losing him on a free transfer in July.

Senesi has drawn interest across the Premier League and abroad, with Napoli identified among the Serie A clubs monitoring his situation. However, Italian outlets indicate that English clubs remain the choice of preference for the Argentinian player.

Newcastle United, Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham are all credited with interest as the race for his signature keeps evolving, per Football Insider’s Evan Shaw.

The Argentina international has delivered consistent performances over the past three seasons, earning recognition for his composure in possession and defensive reliability, something Newcastle and Eddie Howe would appreciate having around, let alone on a free.

While no transfer fee would be required, financial considerations remain key to any move. That’s because the report suggests Senesi is seeking an annual salary of approximately £3.5 million, which equates to roughly £67,000 per week.

That figure would represent a notable increase on his current terms at Bournemouth and may impact negotiations among interested sides, and although Newcastle are expected to submit a bid, it’ll be up to PIF to unlock such a splash.
