Omar Marmoush scored a match-winning brace in the second-half as Manchester City came from behind to win beat Newcastle United at St. James’ Park and progress to the FA Cup quarter-final.

The Blues remain in the running for an unprecedented quadruple as a strike from Savinho and brilliant pair of goals from Marmoush helped Pep Guardiola and co pick up a fourth win over Newcastle United in all competitions this season.

Manchester City saw their Premier League title hopes suffer a major blow in midweek as goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson salvaged a 2-2 draw for Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium.

City are seven points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal with a game in hand and as they prepare for a monumental fortnight of games that include two legs of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie versus Real Madrid as well as the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal.

What did Omar Marmoush have to say after his match-winning brace against Newcastle United?

Marmoush was honest in his assessment of Manchester City’s start at St. James’ Park on Saturday night as Eddie Howe’s side took the game to the visitors and caused them all sorts of problems.

Speaking to TNT Sports after City’s 3-1 win, the Egypt international said: “Amazing performance! We didn’t start so well, we conceded early – but we showed our mentality and our passion on the pitch and we are very happy to go to the next round.”

Manchester City are yet to learn their FA Cup quarter-final opponents but they’ll have to vie for the semi-final in the absence of Guardiola, who picked up a sixth yellow card in domestic competitions this term at St. James’ Park and will now serve a two-match touchline ban.

Marmoush has been in fine form since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations and ahead of a crucial UEFA Champions League tie against Real Madrid next week, Guardiola will be delighted to see the 27-year-old return to the scoresheet.

Marmoush has indeed given Guardiola a welcome selection headache for the Santiago Bernabeu – with one attacking position up for grabs alongside Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo, who are nearly guaranteed to start in the Spanish capital.

Haaland did not make the trip to Newcastle for Saturday’s FA Cup fifth round tie and Semenyo only came on in the second-half as Guardiola made 10 changes to his starting XI from the midweek draw against Nottingham Forest.

Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders will all be vying for a start against Real Madrid, ahead of what is likely to be a midfield trio of Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Nico O’Reilly.

Guardiola will want to keep his tempers about him on the touchline in Madrid because Manchester City need every bit of help they can get to improve upon a trophyless 2024-25 season in their premier campaign under director of football Hugo Viana.
