At a glance
ByCiaran KellyFootball reporter at St James' ParkOmar Marmoush haunted Newcastle United once again as Manchester City came from behind to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had described the prospect of going to a febrile St James' Park as a "nightmare", and it certainly felt like one for the visitors after Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle in front.
But much-changed Manchester City showed their powers of recovery to respond through Savinho and a fine double from Marmoush, who has now scored seven goals against Newcastle in just six games.
Having knocked holders Newcastle out of the Carabao Cup last month, Manchester City have ended Eddie Howe's side's dream of returning to Wembley through the FA Cup.
But it was Newcastle who started this fifth-round tie with real intent and Nick Woltemade saw a header cleared off the line by Nico Gonzalez before the hosts found a way through.
Barnes beat the offside trap to latch on to Sandro Tonali's through ball before taking a touch inside on to his favoured right foot and unleashing a clinical curling effort into the far corner to take the roof off the stadium.
The goal merely awakened Manchester City, though, as the visitors pinned Newcastle back and Guardiola's team drew level following a sustained period of pressure.
Jeremy Doku's drilled cross from the left went all the way through to the unmarked Savinho at the back post, and the ball ended up striking the knee of the Manchester City forward and bobbling over the line.
Stunned Newcastle sorely needed to regroup at half-time, but Manchester City merely picked up from where they left off after the break and took the lead in familiar fashion.
This time Matheus Nunes cut the ball across from the right and there was Marmoush at the far post to lash home after taking a cool touch.
Marmoush grabbed another just a few minutes later after unleashing a rocket from just outside the box, which left Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with no chance.
Manchester City, in the process, reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for an eighth successive season.
Newcastle analysis: Wembley dream is over
The message was clear once the teamsheets dropped.
Although Newcastle have a Champions League last-16 tie to come against Barcelona on Tuesday, Howe only made four changes.
This was not only Newcastle's best chance of silverware but also their best route to get back into Europe next season.
The hosts started the game showing they knew it.
Newcastle quickly got a buoyant crowd into the game, and their press forced Manchester City into uncharacteristic misplaced passes at the back. Howe's team grabbed the opener.
But the tie then got away from them far too easily as they dropped deeper and deeper and saw their midfield bypassed time and time again.
How leaky Newcastle will rue the manner of both Savinho's equaliser and Marmoush's first goal after crosses were not cut out and the pair were not picked up.
The visitors just never looked like getting back into it, but they have little time for a hangover.
Those supporters who stayed until the end repeatedly chanted "Eddie Howe's black and white army", and Newcastle will certainly need St James' at its ferocious best when Barcelona visit on Tuesday.
Man City analysis: Guardiola's team selection pays off

This was the night Guardiola's faith in his squad was rewarded.
The Manchester City manager boldly made 10 changes, as he gave Erling Haaland the night off and named Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, Rodri, Rayan Cherki, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo on a stacked bench.
Just how would this much-changed side respond to going a goal down? After all, the disappointment of Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, which caused them to fall seven points behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League title race, was still fresh.
Well, the visitors quickly provided an answer after rallying in impressive fashion.
You could sense how much this tie meant to Guardiola as he passionately appealed over decisions on the touchline and even ripped off his jacket in the Tyneside chill at one point.
His team mirrored that desire to progress and, at one point, Marmoush sprinted back into his own half to cut out a breakaway from Joe Willock.
Newcastle must be sick of the sight of the Egyptian, who has now scored half of his goals for Manchester City against Howe's team.
What next for these teams?
